  • What is Acquired Brain Injury?


    Acquired brain injury is the term given to any injury to the brain sustained during a person's life. It can occur as a result of:

    • Trauma e.g. a motor vehicle or workplace accident, a fall, an assault or a sports injury. Damage to the brain can occur at the time of the injury or afterwards. (TBI - Traumatic Brain Injury)

    • The effects on surrounding brain tissue that may result from a stroke, brain haemorrhage, brain surgery or brain tumour.

    • A viral infection occurring in the brain e.g. encephalitis. Lack of oxygen to the brain (hypoxia) Everyone's situation is unique.
    One of the most important things about acquired brain injuries is that every person who suffers an injury will have his or her own characteristic difficulties or symptoms, which can range in severity from mild to severe. The combination of symptoms can vary widely according to the extent and locality of the damage to the brain tissue.
